Position Overview

The Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Senior Specialist I is responsible for supporting the implementation of the Exact Sciences' EHS program to include providing the EHS staff and/or site(s) with direction and technical expertise to effectively minimize employee illness and injuries, establishing and maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements and applicable industry standards, enhancing the company's safety culture, and reducing EHS related risk (e.g., fires, environmental releases, etc.) to the organization.

This role is based onsite at our Redwood City, CA offices. Relocation assistance may be provided if needed.

Essential Duties

Include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Lead the emergency response efforts and conduct company-wide drills and trainings, such as evacuation and hazardous material release.
  • Oversee the maintenance of emergency and first-aid supplies.
  • Maintain, implement, track, and update Exact Sciences' EHS policies, programs, procedures, as necessary, and develop new programs, as required.
  • Apply for and maintain applicable permits, as needed.
  • Coordinate ergonomic evaluations, perform assessments, and provide recommendations and adjustments, as necessary.
  • Develop and implement facility-wide policies, procedures, and EHS training programs to ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements and industry standards on a federal, state, and local basis and meet company goals.
  • Create and review the job safety analysis (JSA) with cross-functional groups.
  • Complete hazardous waste storage area inspections.
  • Coordinate and participate in annual risk assessments.
  • Lead and/or support the EHS safety committees.
  • Function as the Chemical Hygiene Officer, Emergency Coordinator, Biological Safety Officer, or other technical lead, as requested.
  • Support daily EHS audits, incident investigations, corrective action follow-up, and other activities.
  • Lead or assist in performing quarterly, annual, and periodic safety audits, such as fire and electrical safety, ergonomics, chemical hygiene, general housekeeping, waste management, personal protective equipment (PPE), and infection prevention.
  • Help oversee chemical inventory and acquisition, obtain safety data sheets (SDS), as needed, and ensure compliance with regulations regarding usage and storage.
  • Coordinate and administer new employee and annual safety training programs.
  • Coordinate fire and severe weather drills to attain 100% participation on all shifts throughout the year.
  • Apply technical expertise in completing risk assessment activities (e.g., PPE Risk Assessment, Industrial Hygiene (IH) Risk Assessment, Ergonomic Risk Assessment, Site Risk Assessment) to minimize EHS related risk (e.g., fire, environmental releases, injuries and illnesses, etc.) to the organization.
  • Oversee and monitor the completion of required tasks of fire extinguisher inspections, lab permit/registration renewals, injury and illness reporting, and regulatory filings and complete in a timely manner.
  • Oversee hazardous and infectious waste disposal program.
  • Work across disciplines with EHS team members to oversee the safety activities of all laboratories, laboratory personnel, contractors, and support staff; communicate to appropriate management when risks are observed, corrected, or in need of further management emphasis.
  • Assist the investigation of trends and work with management to develop engineering or work practice control changes, as necessary.
  • Maintain proficiency in regulations, standards, guidelines, and trends in laboratory safety and EHS; anticipate and evaluate impact and communicate requirements to employees and management.
  • Lead or oversee air quality, noise, biological, toxic, and other hazard sampling.
  • Provide sample/inspection result to help make decisions on findings and reports results to appropriate personnel while maintaining records.
  • Provide practical and feasible solutions to control exposures and ensure compliance with all regulatory guidelines.
  • Maintain strong collaborative relationships with all Exact Sciences' teams while actively promoting a culture of safety, regulatory compliance, ergonomics, and best management practices.
  • Promote a positive relationship and interact with a variety of regulatory agencies and professionals; including OSHA, CLIA, CAP, and other federal, state, and/or local regulations, as applicable.

  • Ability to grasp with both hands; pinch with thumb and forefinger; turn with hand/arm; reach above shoulder height.
  • Ability to comply with any applicable personal protective equipment requirements.
  • Ability to work with hazardous or flammable materials so as not to endanger oneself or others.
  • Ability and means to travel between local Exact Sciences locations.
  • Ability to travel 5% of working time away from work location, may include overnight/weekend travel.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational, Health and Safety, Environmental Health, or related field as outlined in the essential duties; or Associates degree in Occupational, Health and Safety, Environmental Health, or related field as outlined in the essential duties and 2 years of relevant experience in lieu of Bachelor's degree.
  • 4+ years of EHS experience.
  • Demonstrated basic understanding of relevant OSHA, CAP, FDA, and CLIA regulations.
  • Proficient computer skills to include Internet navigation, Email usage, and word processing.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 4+ years of EHS experience in a laboratory or research and development environment.
  • Experience in an EHS role during a period of rapid business growth.
  • Professional working knowledge with creating and implementing new processes or procedures to various employee groups.
  • Professional working knowledge in seeing projects through from initiation to implementation and follow-up.
  • Professional working knowledge with ISO14001, ISO45001, and OHSAS 18001 standards.
  • Frist aid/AED/CPR certification.
  • Department of Transportation (DOT), RCRA, 40hr HAZWOPER, CSP, CIH, CHMM, and/or SLS (ASCP) certification.

Salary Range:

$97,000.00 - $155,000.00

The annual base salary shown is for this position located in US - CA - Redwood City on a full-time basis. In addition, this position is bonus eligible, and is eligible to receive company stock upon hire as well as annually.
